Calamity Jane is a curious name for a squirmy little yellow lab - TopicsExpress

Calamity Jane is a curious name for a squirmy little yellow lab puppy. It makes more sense when you find out that the family from whence she came had a Mischief (her mom), Chaos (her brother), and another dog named Mayhem. So…perhaps there was a little pressure there as far as her name went. However, her dad—a friend of the ‘disaster’ family—the man that actually adopted her, realized that Calamity Jane didn’t roll off of the tongue. So,naturally, Callie it was. But, I need to go back to the story of how Callie and her dad ended up together. Callie’s dad was friends with the breeders, and they had a huge litter of pups. In order to distinguish all of these babies, they bestowed each one with a special colored ribbon around the neck. He knew he wanted to take one of these cute little pups home, but he couldn’t decide on which one. So, he pulled out his guitar and started to play. Two puppies stuck around and listened as he strummed. ‘Purple ribbon boy’ and ‘Red ribbon girl’ obviously appreciated music! Duly noted. The decision was difficult, but Callie’s dad decided to go with the girl (since he had a female dog already), and it turned out for the best. Chaos was the purple ribbon boy, and he turned out to be a CRAZY little dude (his family kept him). Callie was just the right amount of craziness and fun. Her dad moved her down to Florida for a while. Callie joined her little family as the second dog—she had an 11 year old shepherd-mix sister named Casey, and the two girls were inseparable. Callie LOVED to go for walks, and God help whomever might say the word ‘W-A-L-K’ and not be prepared to deliver for this little lady! Callie was best buds with a neighbor dog named ‘Gator.’ Just as it was important to avoid the word ‘walk,’ you could NOT say his name…she knew! Gator was Callie’s best friend, and her dad would let her out to run down the street and play with her bestie…just as a kid would run out to play with their friends. Callie was never known to be a swimmer—she would wade around in the water and have a blast, but she just wasn’t a swimmer, per se. However, one day, Callie’s dad went to a party at Gator’s family’s home. Having fun with his hosts, he suddenly looked over to see Callie…in mid-air…leaping with a giant splash into the family’s pool. Callie was not really a jumper…or a swimmer…really. She must have been showing off for Gator and Bogey—the host dogs. She never performed such a glorious leap again. At the age of 10, sweet Callie was diagnosed with a bone tumor about a month and a half ago. She was so tough that she hung on for quite some time after her diagnosis, but her cancer got the best of her. I came to help her about 6-7 weeks after her diagnosis. She had just enjoyed a delicious t-bone steak for supper. She came right to the door and wagged her tail, but her limp on her front right leg was painfully obvious. She wore out very quickly and let me know that she was ready to move on. She lay down on her special bed and was more than happy to get comfortable. She slipped away very quietly and we’re pretty sure that she took off after her older sister Casey, who left for the Rainbow Bridge when Callie was 3. Or, perhaps, she was in search of her mom. Somehow, that sounds appropriate. ”After 10 years, Callie left us in search of Mischief…” I hope she found it/her …;) Your dad, Caroline and Smokey are going to miss you so much, sweet girl… XXOO Dr. Sunday
