Calangute set to get colour-coordinated The main thoroughfare from the Calangute market junction to the beach is all set to get a new look with the gram sabha on Sunday adopting a resolution to direct all buildings and houses to be painted a uniform yellow and white. The painting will have to be done by the owners themselves, before the peak season. The gram sabha also resolved to remove all the hoardings on the main thoroughfare and directed all establishments to have hoardings of a uniform size of four-feet-by-four-feet. Sarpanch Geeta Parab said this would enhance the image of Calangute as a premier tourist destination. When villagers questioned Parab about the uncertainties surrounding the proposed garbage treatment plant, she said that chief minister Manohar Parrikar has given an assurance that he will construct the garbage treatment plant come what may. She added that the panchayat has decided to give two garbage bins to all households and commercial establishments, one each for wet and dry waste, so that garbage is sorted at source. Regarding the parking travails, she said that in addition to the one bus-bay already commissioned, two more are being developed near the Shantadurga Temple, while a parking lot for two-wheelers is also being developed opposite the government primary school. Villagers also expressed happiness over the commencement of work on the sewerage network and urged the village panchayat members to complete the works at the earliest. They also wanted the police to disperse the migrant labourers who gather in large numbers at the Calangute market junction every morning in search of casual work. Parab also requested villagers to inspect the electoral rolls which have been kept at the panchayat office and inform her if they spot any bogus voters since it has come to light that a number of migrants have been fraudulently enrolling themselves. Villagers also wanted the dance bars and massage parlours which have been shut down to be prevented from re-opening. Parab said she has already written to the chief minister, police and other authorities to take action.
