H. Harris, at Lafayette Underwoods, wits: John J. Powell, Squire Jackson. The following note is in the 1884 marriage certificate folder in the Caldwell County Register of Deeds office, Lenoir, NC, transcribed as found by James Miller: State of N.C. Caldwell County Patterson lafayette underwood being duly sworn says his grandsire on Mothers side was an indian half and white white his grandmother full white thier daughter was his Mother his father was full white Calvin Underwood is his son whose grandfather was half indian half Portugese his grandmother was full white his Mother Peggy thier daughter is my wife. John Powel being sworn says he has known the family for 30 years and believes the above to be true in regard to th Mother of Calvin underwood the other side he does not know anything about sworn to before me this Dec 14, 1884 B. Bentley Underwood was a daughter of James and Sarah Sallie (Kerley) Bentley, and grand-daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Bentley) Bentley. The 1910 Caldwell Co., NC, census shows Calvin and Susan R. Underwood living on Richlands Road. This is the same area where Thomas and Hannah lived in their last years after moving there from Alexander Co., NC. This is also where their sons William George Washington Bentley and Noah J. Bentley lived. Their daughter, Sarah Catharine Bentley, who married William Asbury Graig, also lived in Caldwell County. Thomas and Hannah are buried Nelsons Chapel Baptist church cemtery off hwy 321 above Lenoir, NC. 1910 North Carolina census, Caldwell Co. Richlands Road Underwood, Calvin 55 m [mulatto] married 21 yrs Susan R. 51 m [mulatto] married 21 yrs Bentley, Adeline 40 m [mulatto] sister-in-law The above Adeline Bentley is Margaret Adeline Bentley, who was born 1865 in Alexander Co., NC. We know part of the above census is wrong, since Susan and Adeline are from a white family in Alexander Co., NC NC death records show Calvin Underwood died 22 Nov. 1937 in Burke County, NC, his race being listed as white.
