California Adventure: Day 1 I watched a sea otter twirl like a top in the water while he clung to a tasty treat of clam in each hand. I watched a water cat, also known as a harbor seal, relax on jagged rocks in the pacific. He stretched his jaws in a meow-like yawn before falling deep into a morning cat nap. I found a tangled mess of seaweed with water-filled bulbs along each strand. Im convinced theyre from outer space. I was surprised by foamy water. It soaked my dark-wash jeans as I walked over the rocky coast. I climbed wrinkly rocks, jamming the toes of my too-slick slip on shoes into the narrow cracks. I met a gentle woman whose bright hazel eyes had colors as complex as the washed up ocean plants. I got to pray with her and it was more refreshing than the September wind off the Pacific. I touched veins of salt and pepper granite that ran through the middle of light brown boulders along the beach. I saw a black bird with an orange-juice colored beak peck into the sand for oysters. I braced myself for steep valley descents and harsh curves as we drove along highway 1. I got a neck workout trying to choose between the view of the mountains to my left and the Pacific to my right. I tilted my head trying to find the tops of mountains, but low-laying mist insisted they be kept a secret. I squeezed sand in my hands until the last grains filtered through my fingers and disappeared. I smiled at cottages in downtown Carmel. They had patchwork roofs and pip-squeak balconies all squished into too-few square feet. Im certain they were stolen from a storybook. I wondered at the zig-zag way the land extends into the water at the coast. Its as if the claws of a monstrous bear dug into the earth and pulled. I squinted my eyes trying to pinpoint the blurred horizon between the ocean and its identical blue sky. I felt Gods power as my 3 travel partners and I prayed at the beach. Our words reached God in heaven and He listened. We surrendered things too broken for us to fix on our own and thanked Him for the background sound of crashing waves. I climbed onto a tall rocky island and while my hair pestered my face I tried to capture Day One of California in words... Im going to need a few more days :)
