California Chrome Why Do We Love Underdog Stories Take an unknown thoroughbred racehorse with a questionable pedigree, (His mother, a TB mare ironically named Love the Chase who .....hated to race!! was purchased for the bargain basement price of $8,000. A purchase by two men, Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, both well outside racings royalty. Who, as a single finger salute, named their syndication Dumb Ass Partners. California Chrome was trained by a barely known trainer Art Sherman and ridden by a jockey with a questionable race record, Victor Espinoza. This in a racing world where sycophant talking head experts, cannot see beyond million dollar sales and who miss, completely, the magic of Thoroughbred racing. That magic is in the mix. Owners who are not ‘experts’, who listen to trainers, who don’t follow the crowd, who seats a jockey with a secret skill. A jockey who is an equestrian, who loves the horses he rides and believes in the basics: Trust – Respect – Engagement. Then there is the real star, a horse with millions of years of speed, and the ability, the willingness and courage to tap completely, into that heritage. We love underdog stories, because in our hearts we know that real success comes not from what we are told by the experts; rather what we believe, our own ability. This is a story that we have heard before and the similarities are astonishing. A society brought to its knees by a greedy few, looking for some affirmation, that there is purity and goodness in this world. No matter the outcome in today’s race this the kind of story that re-instills our faith in the underdog. Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral - 1938 Match Race (Pimlico Special) youtu.be/WVT2MPNCqgM
