Call for Additional Papers If you are interested in contributing to this special issue, please contact the Editor with a short abstract. Special 2015 Issue of Irish Journal of Sociology on Racisms and Anti-racisms in Europe Editors: Lucy Michael, University of Ulster, [email protected] Brian Conway, NUI Maynooth Call for Special Issue The progress of anti-racism has been uneven in Europe, with new and emerging racisms challenging established positions on equality and diversity. National experiences of migration, insecurity and, more recently, austerity measures, have produced new challenges to racial and ethnic equality. This special issue will bring together a range of work on racisms and anti-racisms to explore the contemporary Irish and European experience. How do contemporary racisms reflect this changing context? How do racisms emerge in areas experiencing new forms or levels of ethnic diversity? How do ‘new racisms’ reflect established forms and how are these enacted? How are racisms performed by various political and institutional actors? What do anti-racist movements look like in this context? How do institutional and political actors understand the changing context in addressing equality issues? What new forms of anti-racism are emerging in this context? What are the enduring challenges confronted in anti-racist efforts? What are the challenges for researchers attempting to map or evaluate anti-racist policies and practices? Contributions may engage with a wide variety of issues, involve a range of methodological approaches and operate at different levels (neighbourhood, city, region, state, international). We also welcome papers interrogating the capacity of alternative methodologies to capture contemporary racisms and anti-racisms. Papers that investigate contemporary racisms might: · Examine racisms in new contexts and/or the lived experiences of racism by minority ethnic populations · Investigate the impact of changing demographics on community and social institutions and the connection to racisms emerging in this context · Examine the emergence of new ways of thinking about racialisation and racisms · Interrogate the intersectional nature of racisms · Explore racisms performed by political and institutional actors Papers that investigate contemporary anti-racisms might: · Investigate new institutional, organisational, civic or community responses to racism · Explore the emergence or adaptation of social movements in relation to new ethnic identifications or racialisations · Explore claims to a ‘post-racial’ era in Europe · Reflect new approaches to enacting anti-racist positions · Explore the interface between faith and ethnicity in anti-racist efforts · Assess the reception of anti-racist policies and their implementation Papers submitted to this Special Issue undergo the normal peer-review process and must be prepared in conformity with the journal’s Submission Guidelines. Please see the journal homepage at manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/journals/ijs Deadline: 1 December, 2014. Queries: Please contact the Editor: [email protected] The issue will be published in 2015.
