Call for Solidarity: Support the Protests in Istanbul, Turkey! Istanbul is being plundered by an aggressively pro-business government and its international allies. Last week, seventy people in the central Taksim Square stood up against the pillage. Their immediate goal was the government’s project to bulldoze Taksim’s last green area. Their peaceful resistance was met with excessive police violence and incited a massive uprising of millions across Turkey Over the last years, the Turkish government became increasingly authoritarian. It has constantly undermined the powers of the judiciary, the media and civil society. Hundreds of journalists, students, intellectuals, and activists are behind bars. Illegal telephone tapping is rampant. All these have created a society of fear. The government’s frantic crackdown of urban rights activists in Taksim struck a chord with the millions who suffer from this authoritarianism. Taksim was the spark that finally brought them together. The police force is now out of control. Two protestors have been killed, thousands are injured. Several have lost their eyes or faces. Protestors are being subject to inhuman and degrading treatment under custody. We demand an end to police brutality. We demand an end to the profit-driven demolition of Turkey. Globalize the fight for political and social rights! Pillagers, hands off of Istanbul! Democracy now! Share
