Call for papers: Middle Eastern, Middle-Eastern-American, and Middle-Eastern-Canadian Theatre and Performance (Canada) Submission Deadline: October 24, 2014 Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Annual Conference July 30 - August 2, 2015 Montréal, Québec Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel We invite papers that broadly address the conference theme of “Je me souviens” as relates to Middle Eastern, Middle-Eastern-American, Middle-Eastern-Canadian, or other Middle Eastern hyphenate, theatre and performance. In what ways does Middle Eastern theatre and performance, and its hyphenates, invoke remembering, link past to future, or recall the past in order to lament the present or imagine the future? In what ways does it associate remembrance with place? To quote the conference website, “Issues of country/isolation/assimilation,… as well as acts of revolt/revolution, quiet and otherwise, give rise to consideration of the silences, the unsaid, the gestures, the sub-text, the dangers, the misunderstandings, the non-discursive in the ‘in-between’ terrain between cultures, countries, and constituencies…. Building on this, we can also embrace inter/trans-national and inter/trans-cultural exchanges and performance texts, process, or production.” The rich, complex history of the Middle East and Middle Eastern diaspora provides fertile ground for exploring these issues, as expressed through the theatre of the region and beyond.
