I call these the nuisance mosquitoes because their eggs hatch when it rains and water is lying on the ground, millions of them hatch at the same time. This is when we need all the birds, bats, dragonflies, frogs,lizards and anything else we can get that feeds on mosquitoes to be actively feeding on them. Mosquitoes are part of the food chain and the food chain is being destroyed by pollutants. Although the mosquito fish rarely exceed 2 in length, one fish will eat between 250 and 300 mosquito larvae per day. 1,000 mosquito fish will consume between 250,000 to 300,000 mosquito larvae a day. There is no better predator of mosquito larvae than this fish. Mosquito fish are extremely hardy and will tolerate and thrive in just about any water, regardless of ph or oxygen content.
