Calling all Playwrights Be part of the South African New Plays Writing Programme Wits Theatre in association with the Department of Arts and Culture invites playwrights to apply for the second cycle of the South African New Plays Writing Programme. The first cycle of SANPWP was launched by Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile at the Wits Theatre in January 2011. This cycle will once again be facilitated by Ola Animashawun, who has over 25 years of experience of working in theatre. He is an Associate Director of the Royal Court Theatre (London) where he founded and directed the Young Writers Programme, and leads the introductory writing courses offered by the Royal Court Studio, alongside playwriting programmes in Brighton, Birmingham and Coventry. The aim of the project is to support the development of new plays by creating skilling platforms for writers to hone their skills. Ultimately, the desired outcome is new South African plays by young playwrights telling new stories in their own unique voices. Writers chosen for the programme will participate in a 2 day workshop at Wits University in early August. The workshop will focus on character, structure, dialogue and dramatic tension. Writers will then be expected to develop their ideas, with support, into detailed treatments. From these ten writers will be selected to take part in a five day intensive workshop in early December. Writers will have until March to work on first drafts of their plays. The writers of the best plays will be offered opportunities that include rehearsed readings to be produced by Wits Theatre. Interested writers are invited to submit applications as a single Word document no longer than 12 pages with the following information: • one-page CV including contact details, • one page letter of motivation • 10-page excerpt of a play (note that writing samples must be original and must not have been previously produced or published) Applicants will need to make themselves available for a two day workshop on either on 2nd and 3rd August or on 4th and 5th August. There are a limited number of travel & accommodation bursaries for participants not from Gauteng. Applications should be submitted via e-mail to [email protected] by no later than 5 July 2013. The selection process will be facilitated by the Wits Theatre in consultation with DAC and other partners. Ends
