Calling all South Ward Artists: The city of Winston-Salem has issued a call to artists to submit proposals for an iconic piece of public art that will be displayed for at least a year and serve as a capstone to the city’s centennial celebration. The City Council is commissioning the art to mark the 100th anniversary of the consolidation of Winston and Salem under a single municipal government. The city’s request for proposals states, “The selected piece will highlight not only the storied history of the city but will pay homage to the immense contributions of women to the growth and development of Winston-Salem.” The City Council approved the co-emphasis on women’s contributions because there are already a number of memorials to the contributions of men, such as the statues of R.J. Reynolds and George Black. The work can be in any medium but it must be suitable for display outdoors for at least a year in a heavily trafficked area. The artist selected to provide the piece will receive $30,000 for compensation, design and creation. The money will come from the city’s public art fund. Proposals must be received by Sept. 30 and will be screened by a panel of local artists and others appointed by the City Council. This panel will select three finalists, who each will receive $750 to produce a scale drawing, digital three-dimensional image or maquette of their proposal. The City Council will select the winning design. The winning design will be displayed for at least a year in a prominent location, such as Corpening Plaza, Winston Square Park or Grace Court Park.
