Calling all school teachers!!! Have you had a look at the new Arts - TopicsExpress

Calling all school teachers!!! Have you had a look at the new Arts National Australian Curriculum? I have been wading through it (gosh it is long!) but believe me it is an absolute joy to read!!! There is a big focus on early childhood play for one, and using the EYLF as a strong foundation for K-2 teaching programs. To me it also clearly communicates that all learning areas and the 7 general capabilities can be integrated with the Arts, and are in fact enhanced by this. Also, all students across our country should be getting access to, and in fact prioritising, childrens involvement with the creative arts (imagining, playing, creating, responding to etc ect). Perhaps it has been that the Literacy, Numeracy and History curriculums came out so long ago that teachers have felt the creative arts had to give way to those learning areas... but that is only because the Arts curriculum had not been finalised. February 2014 is when teachers must start implementing the Arts Curriculum (if they hadnt been already!) and it really is music to my ears ♥♪♫ It is clearly stated in the document that children learn through play, need to engage in dramatic play, music and movement, have their creativity and imaginations nurtured and be given plenty of opportunity to express their own unique artistic personalities. It also states that schools should be bringing in a range of creative arts incursions (thats where someone like me comes in with my musical storytelling performances!!!!), take the students on excursions to galleries, theatres etc, and support their teachers with high quality PD (Another area I specialise in!) The Arts is a wonderful way to support intercultural understanding, sustainabilty, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capabilities and learning about our own Indigenous Australian culture. If you have not looked at the Arts Curriculum yet, please get a copy, make yourself a cuppa, and settle in for a wonderful read this weekend. I promise you will be feeling so positive after, and super inspired to start implementing much more dance, drama, music, visual art and media art into your everyday programs!!! :) Happy reading!
