Calories Dont Count Myth - no Insulin means you can eat all the fat you want Remember when I said the fitness industry has a way of taking a half truth and running with it? If you ever want something taken out of context, look no further than explaining fat cell flux and insulin. Unfortunately it leads some believers to falsely assert that the only key you need to stripping fat is to eliminate insulin. They say something along the lines of: If you dont eat any carbs at all, you wont release any insulin, so you can eat all the fat you want. This leads the calorie lovers to come out crying the above comment being bull$%!t. And theyre completely right. Of course youre not going to get lean by eating an unlimited amount of butter, bacon and lard. No one ever said you can just eliminate insulin and then eat all of the fat you want. In fact, no one said you could eliminate insulin at all. That would be ridiculous. There is already a word for that. Its called type I diabetes. And if you somehow magically give yourself this through diet manipulation, well, lets just say you have bigger things to worry about. Your body will always release insulin. Hell, you even get a raise in insulin levels from eating certain amino acids. What I do mean is you do have to control insulin. Control its output and maximize your sensitivity to it. Also, remember, insulin is the main regulator of your fat cell. Not the only one. There are other hormones. But Ill leave them for another time. Just because calories dont count, doesnt mean that the amount, type and quality of each macro doesnt matter. Instead of just the calorie content of the food, it is more the effect that these foods have on the body, ie the enzymatic and hormonal effect. Amounts of foods affect the body, just not in the way that we thought they did. You still have macro targets, but there is never a consideration given to their calorie content. Obviously, on this type of diet, your calorie intake is never a consideration, period. Only consideration is the effect that these macros - in that dose - will have on the body as well as the state of the body at time of feeding. Goal is to create an environment that promotes lean mass gains while sustaining an environment conducive to far loss. You can call it #paleo if you want. You can call it #cleaneating. You can call it #nutrienttiming. You can call it #IIFYM without the calorie part. I really dont care what you call it. In fact, any decent diet should have more than one of these principles in common with each other, thats what makes them work. Your biology and physiology only works one way, so if none of these diets had anything in common Id be more worried. Remember though, the common themes to any diet, or the goal of any diet should first and foremost be: Essential Aminos Essential fatty acids Essential micro nutrients Once your body has enough nutrients to meet its base requirements anything else above and beyond that is purely viewed as an energy source. You just need to make sure youre choosing the right foods that adequately fuel performance and recovery while at the same time maximize fat loss.
