Calypso Monarch leads Walk Against Crime Calypso monarch Roderick “Chucky” Williams, former national calypso monarch Kurt Allen Olympian Roger Daniel of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will lead the Port of Spain and Environs Education District - Walk Against Crime at the Queens Park Savannah today (Thursday). Eight thousand children from 80 schools in Port-of-Spain and Environs will come out to make a statement against injustice, for the Eleventh Annual - Walk Against Crime -Walk For Sport Walkathon at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Thursday 20th March. The Queens Park Savannah is expected to be overflowing. With a reputation for the biggest walk against crime in the country, it provides the children with the opportunity to show their concern for the crime wave in T&T. The main sponsors of this years walk are Crimestoppers Incorporated, Blue Waters, Bmobile, BPTT, Scotia Bank, Angostura Limted, The Ministry of Education, The Ministry of National Security, The Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago and The Ministry of Sport. The walk will commence at The Paddock, Queen’s Park Savannah, from 9.30 am this morning. Central Port-of-Spain schools will lead off the walk headed by School Supervisors III- Jenny Lynne -Cyrille and Olson Oliver, President of the Crimestoppers Inc. Garland Samuel and Malika Morre of Blink Vigilance. Chief of Defence Force Staff Brigadier Kenrick Maharaj and Vice Chief of the Defence Staff - Brigadier General Anthony W. J. Philips - are expected to be in attendance. Also invited are Ian Alvares and Faye Ann Alvares. Valentino Singh, sports editor of the T&T Guardian, Assistant sports editor Keith Clement and hockey standout Stacey Siu Butt will also join the walk. Speaking about the event, sports personality Kelvin Nancoo said: “The walk is the only way that the children of the Port-of-Spain District can show the public how they feel about crime. They will have placards and I expect them to sing and chant and that is the most important thing for the children socially. “The event is part of the curriculum and it will be a learning experience for them to interact with others. The walk against crime is a very important message to children all over Trinidad and Tobago.” Nancoo added that the expected outcome was for the children to understand that through sport and culture, positive things can be done.
