Cambodia, Malaysia reign supreme in AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Sub-Zonal Tournament of SEA Zone Pathum Thani, Thailand, November 11, 2014 - Cambodia and Malaysia underlined their supremacy over the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Development Division, Southeastern Asia presented by Chang, with the former struggling to beat the Philippines in the mens final showdown and the latter thrashing the Filipinas for a clean sweep in the womens single round-robin competition. On a sunny day with searing heat, Cambodia, which performed well beyond everyones expectation to top the mens Pool A the previous day at the competition venue inside Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University venue, opened up the day with a convincing straight-match win over Laos in the first semi-final clash, while the Philippines came from behind to beat Malaysia 2-1 in the other semi-final encounter. Cambodia As Sim Khlork and Lim Samat remained in devastating form to beat Laos As Souliyanh Chittavongsack and Anouvong Xiyanchan in comfortable straight sets 21-14 21-10 in 28 minutes to help Cambodia take an early 1-0 lead. The Cambodians entirely ended the Laotians determined challenge shortly afterwards when Som Samith and Phat Sopheak sent Bounyong Bounpheng-Vilanut Vilaisak packing 21-10 21-11 in a totally one-sided 23-minute battle in Team B competition. In the mens showdown, Cambodia As Sim Khlork and Lim Samat came from behind to beat Philippines As Jade Bacaldo and Loujei Tipgos 20-22 21-16 15-10 in exhausting 53 minutes before Som Samith and Phat Sopheak pulled off a hard-fought 24-22 25-23 win over Edward Ybanez and Edmar Bonono in the Team B competition to help Cambodia capture the 2-0 victory over the Philippines and the championship. Malaysia produced an impressive come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Laos in the third-place playoff. Champions Cambodia and the respective two runners-up the Philippines and Malaysia have next qualified for the second phase of the AVC Continental Cup (South East Asia) against Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, all of which have automatically qualified. Singapore finished fifth overall following a straight two match win over Myanmar in their playoffs on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Malaysia, which downed Myanmar and Singapore the previous day, made a perfect run in the womens single round-robin competition after powering past the Philippines in their last encounter on Tuesday. In a match to determine the eventual winners of the tournament, Malaysia As Luk Tech Hua and Beh Shun Thing came from behind to beat Philippines As Kasilag Etaine and Cherry Ann Rondina 18-21 21-11 15-8 and Ariffin and Polly Sim Pelyi thrashed Michelle Datuin and Gretchen Ho in the Team B competition. Malaysia eventually beat the Philippines 2-0 for straight three victories to stamp their domination in this tournament. The Filipinas, who also beat Myanmar and Singapore the previous day, finished second overall with two wins against one loss. Singapore had to be content with the third place following a 2-1 win over Myanmar. At the completion of the round-robin competition on Tuesday, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore finished top three to qualify for the second phase of the AVC Continental Cup (South East Asia) against Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, all of them have automatically qualified.
