Cambodia recently announced it will raise the minimum wage for garment factory workers to US$128, $28 more than what they currently make, but $49 less than what they have been demanding and protesting for this year. The cost of a pair of sneakers here in the US can be as high as US$170 if not more. I recently spoke with Khieu Mok, one of the subjects in A River Changes Course. She said once their salary goes up, her landlord will probably raise her rent, which was already increased from US$45 to US$50 earlier this year. Khieu got married this past March and she is now three months pregnant. She said she had a dream she was going to have a baby girl. If she does, she doesnt want her daughter to work in the factories. However, shes not sure if the fate of her child will be very different from her own. Her younger brothers, whom she was supporting to go to school, are now also working in the garment factories.
