Came across this today, very timely, as I was going to post about rewards/punishment and communication with children after hearing a mums plea for help on the radio yesterday. My answer is that children learn what they live. The most effective way to teach kids is to treat them the way we want them to treat others: with compassion and understanding. When we spank, punish, or yell, kids learn to act aggressively. A great book about effective communication is How to Talk so Kids will Listen, and Listen so Kids will Talk. It has activities, reminder lists and comics, making it great for dipping in and out of as and when needed. Another great way for effectively communicating (with anybody, not just little people!) is Nonviolent or Compassionate Communication. Olga of hearttoheartconnection.co.uk will be speaking about it in Dundalk on 23rd September. More info on her website.
