Can Life by sacred without God? Lets get the issue of derivation or literal meaning out of the way first - sacred pretty much means something like sharing in the quality (Holy) of God and therefore a thing which is sacred is treated with similar reverence and care as one would treat God face to face, should that ever happen to you. So in a literal sense, if there is no god then there can be no sacred. In a purely material reality Life cannot be sacred because it cannot share in the qualities of a non existent deity. So - in that materialist version of reality Life has no special quality, is simply one thing among billions of things, all of which are equally devoid of any quality other than brute, temporary, existence. ALL REASONING IS SUBJECTIVE Now all of what I just wrote presumes that the nonsense idea of objective reasoning is an actual thing. What I just wrote is written by adopting a role, a role billions of Westerners adopt every day - the role of disembodied mind, often misnamed rational thought. For every human, always, our emotion and our body is intrinsic to our reasoning. Our experience, past and present and the way WE have interacted with that experience, is always involved in our reasoning. All reasoning is subjective, contingent and dependent on personal experience. The person who says they are thinking objectively about something is kidding themselves and has just LOWERED the quality and reliability of their reasoning. BACK TO MY MAIN POINT. So the point of that small statement about all reasoning being subjective and personal is to lay the foundation for my next suggestion about the sacredness of Life. Every person starts out experiencing THEIR life as infinitely important, valuable, precious. We all start out perceiving our own existence as SACRED. We may not use that word, but we ACT as if our own existence is sacred. We treat our life as precious and important, worthy of care and respect, of being protected from mistreatment and reduction. Well, reality of peoples experience is not quite so clean cut, plenty of people experience being treated as worthless from a young age and plenty of people experience despair and feel that existence is worse than non existence. All the same, even for those souls, the decision to cease to exist is never taken lightly, even when the burden of existence is incredibly high most of us fight and fight and fight to stay alive and to find something better in our present and our future. Even the beaten and despairing enact a stance of sacredness to their own life. The overwhelming majority of us, even those who suffer horribly at the hands of nature or depraved humanity, find within ourselves a bedrock stance of My existence matters to me. And from that flows also.......and I want my existence to be respected, welcomed, cared for, celebrated, protected and valued as something precious and important... It sounds to me like most of us experience our existence as SACRED. For me, that is a real REASON to say that Life is sacred. Not just my life. Yours, everyones.
