Can PKD Patients Eat Bread Most of us may have heard that bread products can be the foundation of a healthy low-fat diet, which is good for people with PKD. In addition, bread also provides much essential nutrition and has a lot of other benefits, because many types of bread contain heart-healthy nuts or seeds, which are high in unsaturated fats, walnuts and flaxseed, potassium and dietary fiber. Since bread has so many benefits, does it mean all people can consume it? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Because bread usually contains rich potassium, patients with high potassium level had better limit the intake of bread. ◆The recommended bread for kidney disease patient Compared with whole grains bread, white bread is suggested for it contains less phosphorus and potassium. The more bran and whole grains in bread, the greater the potassium and phosphorus content (and higher fiber content). As for the wheat bread, if it does not contain whole grain, it is okay for most kidney disease patients. Whole grain bread is a high-phosphorus food. Your physician may recommend avoiding all whole-grain foods or limiting them to smaller portion sizes like a 1/2 slice of bread. If you must avoid whole-grain bread in your diet, you may wish to explore other dietary options. Low-phosphorus grain alternatives include white breads, bagels, dinner rolls, English muffins and croissants. ◆ Don’t eat too much every meal. Bread is mainly made of grains, which is limited when the patients’ blood tests show phosphorus or potassium levels are above normal. The products of bread can increase the burden of the kidneys to some extent, so the patients with renal failure should avoid too much bread. ◆ Don’t eat the very soft bread. The soft bread or snacks usually contain potassium bromate, which is more likely to cause kidney tumor if eating too much. Potassium bromate can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, renal tubular necrosis and many other diseases, so the patient with renal failure had better not choose soft bread. All your food choice should be on the basis of your medical conditions. Even the white bread, sometimes, may be not a good choice, as it may come from different brand or different bakery and confectionery.
