Religions & Human Conduct (Continuing our ongoing DISCUSSION, including Bobs RANT) - Canadian Church & State CSDCC is a Facebook Life Discussion Project of Canadian Life Consulting (CLC), the Manager of CSDCC. Bob Armstrong is the Coordinator of CLC. Discussion Material When it comes to religion, most 21st century Canadians are a tolerant lot, with a “live and let live” mentality. We tend to not particularly care about other Canadians’ religious beliefs, or lack of religious beliefs, and we expect a similar tolerance in return. But when the supposed separation of Church and State starts to erode, we take notice. As Stephen Harper gears up for the next election, some of us wonder if the massive changes to Canada that have already been perpetrated by the Harper government are connected to his religious beliefs. In her 2010 book, The Armageddon Factor, Marci McDonald warned about the “theo-cons” (Stephen Harper’s word), who view “science and environmentalism as hostile to the Bible.” Regarding the church that Harper has belonged to for nearly three decades – the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church – McDonald noted that its “adherents believe that the Bible is ‘inerrant’ and the Second Coming is ‘imminent’.” Question: What is the significance of the desire to separate Church and State? Bobs RANT: Religious adherents often feel they are obliged by their religion to care for their neighbour, their society and their planet. To them, this means involvement in the real world, and participation in making things better. Obviously, when it comes to their perspective on what is better, that perspective is significantly shaped by their religious beliefs. But when one becomes involved in the political process, is there any limit to the extent to which religion affects civil decision-making? Some argue that there is no limit....a person should in all cases, act fully according to their most important beliefs, and it should inform all civil decisions. What do you think of this no civil limits on religious belief decisions? Is PM Stephen Harper fully entitled to make decisions about civil matters according to the way he honestly sees the world (as influenced by his religion)? If there is no check mark in front of it, it means you get NO NOTICE of any posts on our group wall. However, if you click on the word notification, you get a drop-down menu - the reason there is no check mark is because the option off is checked. But there are three notice reception options: All Posts; Highlight; Friends Posts. If you wish to get a notice at the top of your personal page (the icon with the red numbers) every time a post is made here, then click on All Posts and a check mark will appear in front of it, and now there will be a check mark in front of the Notifications box as well. So we recommend to members, that to keep up on the discussions/debates/light-hearted posts here, click All Posts. Who Should Post Here? This FB “group” is provided under my (Bob Armstrong) personal account, but is open to all members of CSDCC as a community wall, to post/comment. I am the moderator of the group. All CSDCC FB Group Members are invited, and urged, to post about their life interests (serious and comical) and share them with the group - start a conversation on a topic that interests you. We do focus, however, on trying to encourage good, ethical human conduct, and posts conducive to that. We also invite comments on threads by others, to keep the dialogue going. Lets all have an interesting and active discussion on many threads! And when you comment on a thread down the page, it is then brought up to be the top post, so all will know what is new, and that the dialogue on it is continuing. This Group We have almost 600 CSDCC members from all over the world. We are a sort of community. So Id like us all to meet each other, even if we may be different from each other. We can share our views with each other, respectfully, even if on the opposite sides of some issues. The goal is to have learning discussions/debates. Those just watching (not posting/commenting) will also benefit by considering the ideas of those posting/commenting. Thanks Thanks to all our international community who like, post and comment.....and join your friends into our international community group. We hope those viewing (and not going public) find the topics educational, and generally interesting and meaningful . Note: Two really nice features of a “group” (which don’t exist on a “personal” page), are: 1. Every comment on an existing post, bounces it to the top of the scroll. So it is very easy when you visit, to see the new content! 2. A member can join a friend into the group, with no moderator consent required.
