Canadians are rightfully concerned about yesterdays attack in Ottawa. The C.S.I.S, unlike the C.I.A. is authorized by law to operate within Canada, with few limitations. Canada does not discuss sources and methods, but it is clear that their electronic intelligence likely aided by the U.S. is very good. Unlike the U.S. it is more than likely that with their laws, they will be likely to start surveillance of various types on ordinary Muslim temples as well, which they already believe are breeding grounds for terrorist recruiting by radicals. Civil rights groups there and here will yell loudly, but this is THEIR fight on rights, not ours. Of course, U.S. Media types will jump into the discussion, uninvited, with their take on what to do. We should NOT underestimate the RCMP and CSIS in identifying and arresting suspects. They have a different legal standard than we, much like England. We must respect their sovereignty, I.M.O. If they ask our help, we should oblige. They have a very strong investigative track record, though this matter will be challenging.
