Cancer research centre, Kochi THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said at a press conference after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the government had decided to start a cancer research centre in Kochi. The foundation stone for the centre would be laid near Kochi Cooperative Medical College. The government would allocate fund to meet the expenses of the centre in the initial year. A separate account would also be opened for the purpose. The chief minister said: As many as 80 people have died in the monsoon calamity and the government has sanctioned Rs 178 crore to carry out relief measures. The dependents of the deceased will get Rs 2 lakh each. Rs 2 lakh will be given to each family whose house has been destroyed completely in the monsoon rains. There are 4900 houses with partial damage. The affected persons will also be given a month’s ration for free. To get rid of the water-logging in Kuttanad, sand will be removed from Thottapalli spillway. Sixty woman SIs and 250 woman constables will be recruited in the State police force.
