Capoeira de Besouro I just discovered a great CD from back in 2006 called “Capoeira de Besouro.” This CD features songs from a musical stage play entitled “Besouro Cordão de Ouro” which celebrated the life of the legendary capoeirista Besouro Mangangá (Manoel Henrique Pereira 1895 – 1924) from Santo Amaro. Besouro was born a mere 7 years after the official abolition of slavery in Brazil. This post-abolition era in Brazil is notorious for the brutal police repression of Afro-Brazilians, and is historically analagous to the “Jim Crow” regime that terrorized African-Americans in the southern United States in the years following abolition here. Besouro Mangangá was legendary for his use of Capoeira, a martial art of Angolan origin in resisting and confronting police violence against Afro-Brazilians in Bahia. The music for “Besouro Cordão de Ouro” was written by one my favorite composers, Paulo César Pinheiro. Pinheiro had been married to the great samba singer Clara Nunes (before her untimely demise), and wrote many of the afro-centric sambas which she made famous. Each of the 15 songs on this CD is named for one of the traditional toques de berimbau. These songs are all built around a beautiful mix of nylon string guitars and berimbaus (played by Mestre Camisa and Mestre Lobisomem), accompanied by other traditional percussion from the roda de capoeira or roda de samba. The songs are beautiful, and the arrangements manage to pull all of these diverse elements together into something that is far greater than the sum of it’s individual parts. So here is the link to the entire “Capoeira de Besouro” album on YouTube. I hope that you enjoy this album as much as I did.
