Captains Report: Well what a few weeks this has been – the County Championship qualifier being held here at Houghton-le-Spring Golf club and going off fantastically well and in good weather. Our Houghton players Jonny Cossar, John Ellison, Sean Foster, John Hogg, Jeff Willey and Ian Wilson all qualifying for the 1st and 2nd rounds to be held at Eaglescliffe tomorrow Saturday 24th May – well done and good luck. Should the players be successful tomorrow rounds 3 and 4 are again played at Eaglescliffe the following day Sunday 25th May. I am sure you will all join me in wishing them all the best of luck. Junior Captains Day was held last week with a fantastic day had by all especially Rio who did an amazing job ably assisted by his family – well done Rio it was a day you will remember forever. The team games have now commenced, we have played Seaham at home winning 9-5 and Chester-Le-Street away with a commendable result although we lost 8-6. The next team match is at home against South Shields on Tuesday 27th May at 5.00pm. Well done Dave Pringle & Neil Heron on their progress through the Daily Mail Foursomes competition, unfortunately, they went out of the competition last week at Ramside losing 4&3. On Wednesday 21st May we had the EGWA Ladies Regional Medal Final the first ever England Golf event held at Houghton-le-Spring Golf Club. There were 120 ladies plus caddies and officials of England Golf at Houghton for the day and all were extremely impressed with our course, the organisation and friendliness of everyone connected with the club and even the superb weather we ordered especially for the day! Well done to everyone it was a great team effort and a big success for our club which certainly put Houghton-le-Spring on the map. A special well done to Chris Bryson who finished with a fantastic Nett 73 to be just outside of the 72 required to be in the top 10 to qualify for the grand finale. Lady Captains Day is on Sunday 8th June so let’s hope we have a good field and great weather. Celebrity Golf day is then following on quickly and is only a couple of weeks away on Saturday 14th June. Plans are coming along nicely for the event – thank you to all of those members who have taken up the opportunity to take part following their qualifier success and for supporting The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Foundation. The following week sees our new competition The Dulux 4 Person Team Open kindly sponsored by Dave Orchin of Dulux. If you haven’t already got your names down to support this new event, please do so as soon as possible, remember it is any combination of 4 men, 4 ladies or a mix of ladies and gents with best 2 scores to count on all holes except par 3s where all scores count. Good luck to all the lads competing in tomorrow’s County Championships. Happy golfing, Ron Captain 2014
