Captured Boko Haram suspect attempts suicide: An alleged member of Boko Haram yesterday in Maiduguri stabbed himself with a broken bottle when he was arrested by youth vigilantes, also known as ‘Civilian JTF’, witnesses said. It was gathered that the suspect, along with another, were on their way to the Baga Fish Market in a pick-up van loaded with cartons of assorted fish under which some rifles were concealed. The suspects were reportedly nabbed near the Timber Market in Maiduguri around 10.35am. Baba Kura, one of the youth vigilantes, said the suspect is one of their most wanted. “When we sighted him in the van at Pompomari Bye-pass heading towards the fish market, we trailed him,” he said. Another vigilante who participated in the arrest said: “Initially, the suspect was resisting arrest but when it dawned on him that we know his identity very well and he is from Bama, he attempted committing suicide by stabbing himself in the stomach with a broken bottle which he snatched from a soft drink hawker.” He added: “Luckily enough, he did not die and more soldiers rushed to the scene. He confessed being a member of Boko Haram. He also said two of his accomplices were around Customs and Gwange area in the metropolis and promised to assist in apprehending them. AFIKPOCHICS BLOG
