Capturing the Light of Lairdland is the theme of a plein air painting workshop to be held at Historic Laridland Farm House on Aug. 9 beginning at 9 a.m. with instruction by Tennessee artist Susan E. Jones. “This introduction to plein air workshop is designed for the beginning painter,” said Jones, explaining that “en plein air” is simply a french term for outside or in the open air. All necessary supplies will be provided and discussed. Jones will offer guidance on choosing plein air easels, paints and solvents, explain the benefits of a limited palette, and help students with color mixing. Students will paint on location, capturing possible subjects like the garden, porches, lawn, barn, 19th century traveler’s cottage, antebellum mansion and plantation smokehouse. “There are numerous vignettes and landscapes from which to choose,” Jones said. “with plenty of one-on-one instruction to help each student create his or her own masterpiece.” At 1 p.m. a meal prepared by Lairdland owner Bennita Rouleau will be served. Following lunch, guests will tour Lairdland, including the Civil War museum filled with artifacts, clothing, military weaponry and equipment and numerous other pieces from the private collection of Don Rouleau. Constructed in 1831, Lairdland’s rich history makes it an official stop on the Tennessee Civil War Trail. Murals hand-painted by respected Tennessee artist and preservationist John Kiser adorn the entrance hall walls. The National Register of Historic Places-listed, pre-Civil War home is decorated with the Rouleaus’ lifetime accumulation of antiques, collectables and memorabilia. The fee for the day’s events, including lunch, is $120 per person. Non-painters may accompany students, enjoy lunch and tour Lairdland for $30. To register, call 615-216-5907. Lairdland is located at Brick Church in northern Giles County, just off Interstate 65, Exit 22. Visit Lairdlandfarmhouse for complete directions. ###
