Carbs in the recent past has became a dirty word in the fitness industry, being out lined as bad for youre health and weight gain. Im here to tell you that carbs should not be cut from youre diet. Carbohydrates have several benefits, not only do they provide you with energy and fuel for youre body, it promotes healthy living. The philosophy of carbs make you fat is ridiculous, any food when over eating can make you gain weight. It doesnt matter if youre diet is high in carbohydrates, high in fat or high in protein, it depends upon how much of these nutrients you consume. Infact, gram for gram, carbs & protein contain less than half the calories than fat. There are 3 types of carbs - Sugar, Startch & Fibre. Sugar is found in many natural foods such as fruit, fruit juice, milk & vegetables. Other forms of sugars are found in processed foods like sweets, chocolate, biscuits etc. What you have to remember though that even though sugars are a carb, not all carbs are sugars. Starch is made up of many different sugar bonds and is also found in foods that come from plants. Starchy foods provide a slow and steady release of energy throughout the day. Fibre is only found in foods that come from plants. Fibre keeps the bowels healthy & some types fibre may help lower cholesterol. Good sources of fibre include vegetables with the skin on, wholegrain bread wholewheat pasta and pulses (beans & lentils). Carbohydrates overall are needed for youre bodies energy system, when consumed it turns into glucose which is needed for all activities in life from going a run to breathing, so Im sure you can guess for yourself, carbohydrates are essential. For many reasons people do not cut out carbohydrates you can do things like carb cycling which promote weight loss but it is still a balanced diet.
