Care Home Cooks Battle It Out For ‘Bake Off’ Title A cook from a north Shropshire care home has beaten off stiff competition from his catering colleagues to scoop the top prize in a bake off challenge. Les Simpson, who works at Coverage Care’s Westlands home in Wem, claimed the title in the final of the hotly contested competition between catering staff at the company’s homes. Ten Coverage Care homes took part in the bake off, which began with inter-home heats in September. Chefs were given 60 minutes to prepare a lasagne and sticky toffee pudding and serve it to residents. After four heats, the finalists, Chris Fair from Woodcroft, Market Drayton, Chris Price from Greenfields in Whitchurch, and Jane Tyrer from Barclay Gardens in Donnington, Telford, lined up alongside Les for the last testing round at Shrewsbury’s Coton Hill House Daycentre’s Forget Me Not café. But it was Les’ vegetarian dish and gluten free apple sponge that was the favourite of the eight-strong judging panel, which included two people with a wheat intolerance to test the special pudding, on December 1. Coverage Care Operations Manager Mary Langdown said the cooking competition had really whetted the appetite of staff and residents. shropshirelive/2014/12/18/care-home-cooks-battle-it-out-for-bake-off-title/
