Caritas Pakistan and Caritas India are responding to epic flooding. Heavy monsoon rains in Kashmir have caused the worst flooding in decades with rescue efforts launched on both the Indian and Pakistani sides of the border. The Chenab and Jhelum rivers rose dramatically at the weekend, causing massive destruction and leaving hundreds of people dead. In Indian-administered Kashmir, aid efforts are being hampered by broken roads and communication links. Large areas in the state capital Srinagar remain under water. Caritas India has had an emergency officer in the flood zone but any assessment was impossible due to lack of mobility. They are waiting for the army to clear the highway to bring aid to the affected zone. In Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan, hundreds of villages have been washed away, embankments broken and roads damaged roads and power lines downed. Two Caritas Pakistan teams are in the field. They say thousands of families are in need of food and safe drinking water. Caritas Pakistan is providing ‘non-food’ kits to affected families in Lahore and Rawalpindi dioceses over the next two days as it assesses how to respond further.
