Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that the clubs summer signings and the departures of Xabi Alonso and Ángel di María were a joint decision taken together with the board. He added that he wouldnt trade his current crop of players for any other in Europe. We have fantastic memories of last year and were fighting to experience the same this year. We have a chance of doing just that because were very competitive. I wouldnt swap this squad for any other in Europe, he told a press conference the day before Real kick off their Champions League defence. Ancelotti admitted that his team has had problems getting going this season, but said that hes not a martyr for decisions taken by the board as regards the make-up of the squad. He said that it was he that wanted to bring in James Rodríguez, and that he had input on the departures of Alonso and Di María. I feel like its my job as coach to fix things, like I did last year. This match has come at just the right time for us to react and show the strength we have in the team, he said. For the first time the Los Blancos boss justified the poor results by referring to the fitness of his players. The problem is obvious, were lacking consistency over the 90 minutes and were a little short of fitness. We need more time to get the players that joined us on 5th August back to top form. They play well, but then they drop off the pace a little because we havent had much time for training, he explained.
