Carlos Slim Helu had himself a day on Friday. The Mexican telecom magnate made $2.13 billion as the value of his publicly traded holdings rose by 4.48%. Though no one could compete with Slim, he wasn’t the only one of the 50 international billionaires whose wealth Forbes tracks in real time to make money during Friday’s trading session, despite the fact that the three major American equity indices sold off just before the day’s close. All told, seven billionaires made more than $100 million in paper gains on Friday, including Larry Ellison, Phil Knight and Mark Zuckerberg. Leading the losers was Spanish retailer Amancio Ortega. His fortune shrank by $757.68 million as shares of his clothing company Inditex shed 1.63% of their value. Together, however, the four richest members of the Walton clan had Ortega beat. Jim, Alice, S. Robson and Christy Walton lost a collective $1.25 billion as Wal-Mart sank 1.02%.
