Carole and I have decided to do something each week for the next - TopicsExpress

Carole and I have decided to do something each week for the next year that we either havent done in a long time or have never done at all. So here goes again: Week 2 (See photo album) We attended the 2014 National Beep Baseball Association World Series which was played in Rochester. Carole worked the base beeper and I photographed the event. To watch what these players do is amazing. The only sighted players are the pitcher and the catcher. The ball emits a constant beep, beep sound and from that blind players are able to hit it and field it. After hitting it, players attempt to get to first or third base, whichever has a beeping sound that is turned on. Fielders must get to the ball, also from the beeping sound, and if they fall on it and raise it into the air before the hitter gets to a base its an out. If not, its a hit. Not only are the players blind, but they are fitted with masks to be sure they cant see at all. It might be noted that the umpires can see. although that was questioned at times. Quietness is essentual so the beeping can be heard. Play had to be stopped briefly when a motorcycle or a train went by or the wind was howling. Teams from all over the U.S. participated in this tournament.
