Catching up with some notes from the coaches regarding the Saturday match between the Bearcat soccer team and #10 ranked AAA Buckhannon Upshur, on Saturday morning in Buckhannon. The rain began before the match and became heavier with each passing minute. The Bearcats performance was as disappointing as the weather, and the B-U team might have put on the best performance the boys’ team has faced so far. The team was lethargic and made mistakes they do not typically make, and as a result, they found themselves in a 5-0 deficit at the end of the first half. However, as they have done in other matches, our players responded positively and executed well defensively giving up only 2 additional goals (one of those a PK) in the second half, losing 7-0 at the end of the 80 minutes. Coach McCarthy noted that freshman Gage Peters, Sean Doyle, Trenton Abraham, and Michael Swiger came off the bench to provide excellent effort and some good quality minutes; that senior Christian Kerns gave an outstanding effort as defensive sweeper in the second half; and that on our end of the field, the team was led by freshman GK Trace Schooley in facing 28 shots on goal. At the halfway point in the regular season the Bearcats are 6-2-2, and are set to square off against Preston, South Harrison, and North Marion this week. Good luck Bearcats!
