Caterpillars have twelve eyes, six on each side of its head. In this photo, you can see three of the six eyes. When you look at close photos of a caterpillars head, from the side, look for the dots. The reason we see the three on the first caterpillar is that it just molted and the head capsule is yellow. When it dries to black, it is hard to see the eyes. The photo of the caterpillar hatching shows the eyes on its head, low down in the front, in a C arrangement of dots. Caterpillars see only light and dark with their eyes.
