Catherine Ashton was the first Westerner allowed to see Morsi. - TopicsExpress

Catherine Ashton was the first Westerner allowed to see Morsi. Perhaps the EU is a more acceptable interlocutor at a time when the Americans are struggling to define their foreign policy in Egypt. Would Ashton be able to find middle ground and confidence-building measures to help both camps find a peaceful way forward? Would the Muslim Brotherhood acknowledge her efforts and impartiality? The outside world has no idea where Morsi is detained. It looks as if the generals want to put him on trial. When will it be, and what the sentence could be, is their next manoeuvre. It will be interesting to see what the military will do with Mubarak. Would the deposed autocrat be acquitted or put under house arrest, so that he could be pampered by his family? Meanwhile the situation on the ground remains explosive, with Morsi supporters refusing to abandon their huge protest camps and the military determined to restore law and order.
