Caught Unprepared! If we are to understand what Jesus thought made the difference between foolishness and wisdom, we must note the following phrase: "The bridegroom was a long time in coming." A long time. So there was a delay, and that created a problem, because it was the delay that would differentiate between the foolish bridesmaids and the wise ones. Notice that if the bridegroom had appeared when he was expected to appear, all the bridesmaids would have been ready, and thus we would have thought that they were all wise. But because the bridegroom delayed, we come to realize that five are foolish. Can you imagine the panic the foolish maidens must have felt at that moment?
