Cavan Chamber of Commerce has encouraged local businesses to sign up to a new Age Friendly Business Recognition Scheme. The scheme was launched on 30th May in The Farnham Arms Hotel. This initiative encouraged businesses to think about their older customers and to make ‘Age Friendly’ changes in their services. Changes could include providing customer seating, making toilets available to customers, clearer signage, smaller portions or special offers for the older customer. Local companies are really beginning to see the benefit in being involved in this scheme with Cavan Crystal Hotel having received numerous bookings from Domestic Tour Groups arising from their work with the Chamber of Commerce and the Age Friendly Alliance. The O2 phone shop in Cavan has also seen the benefit of changing their business structure to meet their customer needs by offering free demonstrations of phone products in older people’s venues in Cavan. Lyn Sharkey, President of the Cavan Chamber of Commerce stated that ‘The Age Friendly Business Recognition Scheme not only promotes social inclusion but is an excellent opportunity for us to review our overall customer service. This can only improve the experience for all of our customers as well as our valued older customers. The over 50 sector have more time to shop around for great value and service and tend to be very loyal when they find it. Cavan Chamber are delighted to be involved in this initiative so that we can ensure they have the best possible experience when dealing with Cavan businesses’. The Business Recognition Scheme is promoted nationally by Age Friendly Ireland. In April this year, businesses from Cavan town took part in a training workshop delivered by Age Friendly Ireland in Cavan Crystal Hotel. The training gave them tips and ideas on how to improve services and increase their older customer base. Following the training, the businesses undertook to survey some of their older customers and produced a charter of commitments. You will recognise the above businesses in Cavan Town that have taken part in this scheme because they will display an Age Friendly Business decal in the window and their charter will be visible on the premises.
