@Caxton Fatanmi A very well-written prognosis of the Nigerian situation. Religious leaders are being coralled into the altar of government inducements; bribed, literally. Most of the new churches, especially of the born-again sort are premised on so-called prosperity gospel. So, from their premise to living with the corruption of the political class is but a small step. And, mind you, these religious elites are also cut from the political elites - they attend the same schools, aspire to the same goal of being rich. However, our definition of riches is not devoid of greed and avarice. Criminality too, of all sorts, is permissible. This is the sociological millieu in which the Nigerian society inhabits. Thus, today CAN, the christian religious body has been hijacked to serve politicians interests. At times, one may not be wrong to think of CAN as the spiritual arm of the ruling party, PDP, by the pronouncements of its leader. This is patently wrong in a democracy. State and religion must live in separate compartments. The way we are going, soon a muslim President will come with a tinge of fundamentalist blood in his DNA; Abuja will then be ruled from Mecca ! Our religious leaders are part of our society, hence, they are just as corrupt and dishonest as the rest of the citizenry. Democracy today is what has made the worst side of us to come manifest. Society evolves through its own dialectical inner being, Nigerias will not buck the trend. The way we are going we will end up in smoke with this dysfunctional polity we have chosen. It is a path to oblivion; unless we get a different leader or set of leaders with a different mentality. But where will such a Messiah come from ? The christians are doing their bits in the destruction of society with false and twisted interpretations of the Christian message; while the extremists of the islamic callings are daily chopping the foundation of the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
