Cde Mkhize took time to interact with various communities today (Sunday) in the Ekuhlehleni area, a rural community along the borders of Mozambique and Swaziland. The ANC-led government has place priority to the development of rural areas, because we don’t believe people should move out of these areas in order to get a better quality of life,” he said. Tabulating some of the successes reached by the ANC-led government over the past twenty years, Mkhize said many parts of uMkhanyakude now boast state of the art clinics, a roads infrastructure, schools, sporting facilities and much more. “The district of uMkhanyakude has the first state of the art school in Ndumo, which is going to be used as a model for future developments in other districts. This is because the ANC wants to ensure that the children from rural areas like this one have access to quality public education, and by the time they reach tertiary level, they can compete on an equal footing with children who went to school in affluent areas,” said Mkhize, who reminisced that the first clinic he opened as Health MEC in KZN was in the same area. The uMkhanyakude district is close to the heart of the ANC and many of its leaders who went into exile using this corridor. “There are so many Umkhonto Wesizwe operatives who used this corridor to cross into Swaziland and many other countries where they received their military training. Many others used the same route to come back into the country to carry out operations to further the liberation struggle.”
