Celebrating their 20th anniversary, I propose this epidemic correlates directly to the growth in popularity of the Food Network! Of course that demands ignoring the explosion of fast food, our increased pace of life in which convenience trumps nutrition, growing poverty, shifting the feeding of our kids to school systems rather than the home, the all too wide spread aversion to exercise, a general lack of nutrition and health education and on and on... sad, really. Even sadder is the movement to normalize being obese by using terms such as big guy or large woman. Frankly, I have never heard a moderately overweight person use those terms, only the obese. I agree that we need to eliminate the stigma of being obese, but not to feel good about it, rather to not be ashamed to ask for help. Enough ranting! but it is so sad to see so many obese kids.
