Celebration: National Day of Afghanistan today Published: August 19, 2013 Today is the National Day of Afghanistan which commemorates its independence in 1919. A landlocked mountainous country in the heart of Asia, Afghanistan is bounded on the north by the Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan; on the east by China and the part of the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir controlled by Pakistan; on the south by Pakistan; and on the west by Iran. Kabul is the country’s capital. The population is around 30.4 million. From 1747 to 1973, Afghanistan was a monarchy. In 1979, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) occupied Afghanistan, after several decades during which the Afghans had to contend with various outside forces. Afghanistan adopted a new constitution establishing a presidential form of government in 2004. In 2005, the United States of America and Afghanistan signed a strategic partnership agreement committing both nations to a long0term relationship. Agricultural production is Afghanistan’s economic backbone. Pomegranates, grapes, apricots, melons, and several other fresh and dry fruits, including nuts, are some of the major agricultural products that the country exports. Construction is also one of the major industries in the country. Afghanistan is a member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). We congratulate the people and government of Afghanistan led by Their Excellencies, President Hamid Karzai, First Vice President Mohammed Fahim and Second Vice President Karim Khalili, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, and Minister of Economy Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, on the occasion of its National Day. CONGRATULATIONS, towards Khalqyar Mandokhail.
