Celebrities shine on GLAADs New York City red carpet GSNs camera was ready at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards 04 May 2014 | By James Withers The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards attracted A-List LGBTI glitterati. Gay Star News was there to take a few photos and ask some questions. The media watchdogs gala was held in New York Citys Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Actor George Takei was the star of the evening as recipient of the Vito Russo Award. The honor is reserved for an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. Unfortunately GSN didnt get a chance to talk to the Star Trek icon. We did try! However, we did share words with Boy George. We asked the pop star, who is headed back home to London, what he considered the next big step on the equality front. He noted it was time for world leaders to be more proactive when anti-gay laws are passed in countries like Uganda, Nigeria, and Russia. We need leaders to be more vocal and stand up for us, Boy George said. It makes me sad there isnt more of a reaction, he continued. GLAAD Spokesperson Omar Sharif Jr. thinks the next front will be protecting students from bullying. Well have to take back one classroom at a time, Sharif said. Twelve-year-old Marcel Neergaard would agree. The Tennessee youngster, who took on anti-gay politicians who supported a bill requiring teachers to out LGBTI students, received a standing ovation during the ceremony. I want to show the bullies they didnt win, he said to the audience. Yael Stone, who plays Lorna Morello in Orange is the New Black, was honored to be associated with an organization that works to make sure people are seen as people. - See more at: gaystarnews/article/celebrities-shine-glaads-new-york-city-red-carpet040514#sthash.3eBBGIn6.dpuf
