Central Arkansas Veternas Healthcare System is Honored to Host the 2014 POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony A ceremony honoring former Prisoners of War (POW) and those service members still Missing in Action (MIA) is scheduled for 11 a.m., Sept. 26 at the Eugene Towbin Healthcare Center, Recreation Center (Bldg. 170) in North Little Rock. The annual event is jointly organized by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) and the Little Rock VA Regional Office in observance of National POW/MIA day. The Honorable Mike Beebe, Governor of Arkansas, is the featured speaker at this year’s ceremony. Since taking office in 2007, Governor Beebe has made improving education, expanding Arkansas’s economy and cutting taxes his top priorities. Born in Aragon, Arkansas, Beebe earned his degree in political science from Arkansas State University and completed law school at the University of Arkansas while serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. Since World War I, more than 142,000 Americans, including 85 women, have been captured and interned as POWs. Not included in this figure are the more than 83,000 Americans who were lost or never recovered. Only one fifth of America’s former POW since World War I are still living (about 22,641). More than 90% of living former POWs were captured and interned during World War II.
