It is one of South Africas leading development think tanks, focusing on critical development issues and their relationship to economic growth and democratic consolidation. Through examining South African realities and international experience, CDE formulates practical policy proposals outlining ways in which South Africa can tackle major social and economic challenges. CDE has a special focus on the role of business and markets in development. CDE seeks to appoint a Programme Director. The successful candidate will be part of the leadership team and will contribute to the development of CDE as South Africas leading think tank and to be responsible for CDEs Jobs and Growth Programme, aimed at influencing South Africas policies. As a member of CDE’s leadership team, the Director will contribute to the development of CDE as South Africa’s leading think tank and to be responsible for CDE’s Jobs and Growth Programme, aimed at influencing South Africa’s policies. Responsibilties: Raise programme and project-specific funds from external donors; Manage senior staff and consultants; Develop and write proposals; Commission and manage research; Design and organise high-level workshops and other events involving senior people from government, business, labour, research institutions and elsewhere; Synthesise findings into CDE reports, position papers and other products; Serve as a CDE spokesman on policy issues in the Jobs and Growth programme; Communicate CDE’s findings and recommendations to a wide variety of audiences; Establish high-level networks nationally and internationally; Key Performance areas: Strategy development for CDE and in the jobs and growth area; Programme design, development and fundraising; Management of senior staff and senior consultants; Production of high-quality reports, events and workshops; Networking effectively with policy-makers and relevant stakeholders; Identifying and communicating CDE’s key messages; Other reasonable and related tasks that may be assigned from time to time. Requirements: Master’s degree in Economics, Politics or other relevant fields; Minimum of 10 years’ experience in policy development and communication/advocacy either in academia, policy institutions or think-tanks; Minimum of five years’ experience managing senior staff and consultants; Team-building ability; Successful programme and project fundraising; Excellent writing skills, notably of research proposals and policy reports, typically for non-academic audiences; Excellent public speaking ability; Familiarity with a broad range of policy areas related to South Africa’s growth and development; Experience in commissioning and editing rigorous and high quality research; Ability to engage, influence and persuade diverse parties, and an appetite for debate in different environments; Ability to travel; Robustly positive about SA’s future, and passionate about making a difference; Committed to CDE’s purpose and core values, such as market-led growth.
