Chairman, Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka chapter, Olayanju Taiwo, has said the union hopes to take a stand on its five-month old nationwide strike by June 24. The lecturers under COEASU had embarked on a total and indefinite strike since December 31, 2013. The union wants the implementation of an agreement reached with the Federal Government in 2010. The union is complaining of poor infrastructure development in colleges of education, poor funding, non-release of the white paper on visitation panel reports, and imposition of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System among others. Mr. Taiwo said in Lagos that discussion was going on between the union and the Federal Government towards ending the strike. He said that the Senate and the House of Representatives had also intervened in the issue by meeting with the union to discuss ways of meeting the demands. “Though it has been promises upon promises from the government, we are optimistic that by the 24th of this month, we would take a stand on the strike,” he said. According to Mr. Taiwo, the lawmakers have promised to do everything possible to fine tune the knotty issues around the strike and bring it to an end. The chairman said that contrary to rumours in some quarters that the strike had been suspended, it was still on and would continue until a logical conclusion was reached.
