#ChallengeThrowback Probably the oldest photo I have in the collection is actually a scan of a distant cousins photo. Soon after my dad passed away I used his car and drove from Detroit to Edinboro, PA and visited my mothers relatives that I hadnt seen in some time. They took me around to visit other relatives too, some they hadnt seen in a while as well. Since much of the family had stayed in Pennsylvania it was a target rich environment- and a LOT of fun to see the farms and homes, and even visited a couple of the cemeteries too. Back to my distant cousin- I knew of the photo of John Cass Jenkins and his wife, Rozillar Perkins Jenkins, I even had a small digital copy but the person that shared it didnt want it displayed- odd I thought but I honored the request. This cousin had the exact same original, must have been a few prints made at the time, and let me use her copier (she wasnt sure how it worked, she had scanned it herself but it didnt turn out very well) so I sat down in her living room and made this scan. My brother had the original of the Jenkins reunion, my mother had srapbooked the newspaper article. There was a mystery of who some of the relatives were on the right hand side. While visiting another relative there in PA I noticed this marriage collage and realized, my goodness, thats the couple on the right hand side! The family historian, Meredith Jenkins, wrote this about his parents- John Cass Jenkins and Rozillar Perkins (interesting language based on the time and place of his writing) JOHN CASS JENKINS second son of Ransom and Deborah Jenkins was born at Hanover, New York. August 10, 1818. In 1837 he with his parents moved to Pennsylvania and located in Springfield township. While there John secured employment at one time helping dig the basin for the Ashtabula Harbor. In 1837 the family moved to Franklin township. ROZILLAR PERKINS daughter of JOSEPH and AMY PERKINS was born in Boston County New York State. April 25, 1827. She moved to Erie County PA. In 1835 her parents settled in McKean township. There were 7 children, Rubin, Orrilla, Permela, Rozillar, Malinda, Susan, and Phebe. Rubin served in the Civil War. He was honorably discharged in 1865. He died shortly afterward. Orilla married Charles Harnes. They went to Southwest Missouri and remained there the rest of their lives. They had one son Emory, who went to Mich. Emery has an granddaughter Mrs. Lila (Brooks) Losinger, now living at Howard City Michigan. R. D. #1. Permela married. Isaac Knapp, they went west somewhere Malinda married Alonson Jenkins and went to Mich. Susan married Comfort Thompson and went to Manistee, Mich. Phebe went to Michigan with her parents they settled near Big Rapids. Rozillar married John Cass Jenkins. JOHN CASS JENKINS and ROZILLAR PERKINS were married April 15, 1844. They lived in Franklin township for two or three years then moved to McKean township. Finally John got tired of renting and decided to buy . About 1852 he found a piece of wood land he wanted. The agent lived in Meadville PA. about 25 miles south of home. He got up one morning milked his cow and started for Meadville afoot. When he reached the agent , the agent said he had just sold that the land. So John returned home. After reaching home John fixed his mind on another piece of land so he the next morning and walked to Meadville and home again making a total of 50 miles each day. He bought the second piece of land, all woods. He soon had enough logs cut and framed for a house about 16 by 24 feet, 1 1/2 stories high with two windows and a homemade door with homemade door latch and blacksmith made door hinges. The cracks between the logs were filled in with pieces of split logs fastened in with cement made of blue clay and straw mixed together. The roof was of boards running up and down and steep enough for the water to run off. The floor was wide cucumber boards. John and Rozillar had ten children, as follows; Porter Joseph, Amy Malinda, Hunnewell Hathaway, John Melvin, Charles Elmer, Della Louisa, Frank Ring, Meredith Allen, Mary Agnes and Flora Candice. With the help of his children he cleared 50 acres of land, he bought more adjoining land, at one time he owned 160 acres. In 1868 he built a frame house on some of the adjoining land and gave up the old log house. He lived in the new house three years and sold it and 40 acres of land, he then built another frame house near where the old log house stood he lived in that till 1883 when he sold the farm and bought another farm about two miles away He lived in this house till 1890 when he sold this place and bought a smaller place across the road in Washington township, where he passed away March 11, 1993. Age 74 Years 7, 7 months. Rozillar Perkins Jenkins continued to live in this house and died December 7th, 1923. Age 96 years, 6 months and 12 days.
