Given annually by the State University of New York, the Chancellor’s Award recognizes SUNY students who have integrated academic achievement with accomplishments in campus leadership, community service, athletics, and performing arts. The awards are made to students graduating between June 2013 and May 2014. Each year, about 350 SUNY students receive Chancellor’s Awards. “The Chancellor’s Awards honors students who have taken full advantage of the academic and extracurricular programs that SUNY provides,” said Nancy Zimpher, SUNY Chancellor. “These proven leaders, athletes, artists, and civic volunteers truly represent the power of SUNY. Barbara Ferrese Currently working toward a master’s degree in social work at Keuka College, Ferrese graduated from SUNY Broome in December 2013 with an associate’s degree in Human Services. “Not being a traditional student, I was older than most of my classmates at SUNY Broome,” she said. “But whenever I had a question or needed help, the faculty were there for me 300 percent. There was never a time when I didn’t feel welcome. The personal attention and the quality of the education were outstanding.” In addition to serving as vice president of membership for the honor society Phi Theta Kappa, Ferrese was a member of the executive board of the Bleeding Disorders Association of the Southern Tier and a United Health Services group counseling facilitator for the Breast Cancer and Caregivers Support Groups. Among her memorable achievements, she said, was serving as a peer tutor. “I tutored fellow students in everything, from math to psychology. I was honored that my professors felt I was capable of doing that.” Alexa Krowiak After graduating in May with an associate’s degree in liberal arts and general education, Krowiak plans to transfer to SUNY Geneseo and pursue a bachelor’s in elementary education. Krowiak also participated in 5K runs that raised money to support homelessness. “The different clubs SUNY offers have definitely helped me become an active and well-rounded student,” Krowiak said. “And being able to play on the tennis team helped me balance athletics with classwork and service. I played tennis both years here, and in 2012, my freshman year, I represented BCC at the national competition, where I was named Second Team All American. It was an honor to be representing BCC.” Kathryn Slattery Slattery is completing her two-year associate’s degree program in one year. After graduating from BCC’s Early Childhood Certificate Program in May, she plans to receive her associate’s from the Early Childhood Program in August. From there, it will be on to SUNY Cortland to pursue a bachelor’s in education with a concentration in math. Eventually, she plans to receive her master’s in education. “My goal is to teach at an elementary school,” she said. “So far, in my short time at BCC, I’ve met faculty both in and out of my program who have challenged and supported me.” In her two semesters at BCC, Slattery has been inducted into the SUNY chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society, and been named to the Presidents Honors List for her academic achievements. Isaac Ward An engineering science major, Ward plans to graduate in May and pursue a bachelor’s in computer engineering at Binghamton University. His career goal is to start his own programming and design business. On the academic side, Ward has been named to the Presidents List for three consecutive semesters, and his athletic skills garnered him a first-place finish in the 2013 Musselman Half Iron Man Triathlon in Geneva, New York. He is also president of the American Society for Engineering Education Club and serves as vice president of service for the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. In addition, he is employed in Binghamton as a paid intern by Finger Lakes Instrumentation, a supplier of cameras used for aerospace research and other applications. The app provides caretakers with a role-call interface with automated alerts. “Being able to study locally has kept me active in my home community and church while providing me with opportunities to serve on campus with Toys for Tots and a fundraiser for fire victims,” Ward said. “I’m thankful for the well-rounded education SUNY Broome has provided me.”
