Change. An inevitable part of reality as the universe itself continues to expand and entropy increases. Five years ago, the pop music world changed with the death of Michael Jackson - change is not always good, yet it comes whether or not we welcome it. Sometimes we lament it - a death, the loss of a job, the end of an era - sometimes we rejoice in it - a birth, a marriage, a promotion - but change itself will always come. In fact, it can be argued that the adaptability to change of the human species is what allows us to survive and even thrive while still being determined to destroy each other, albeit our time on earth is yet short and we have adequate opportunity before us to strive, with great determination, towards the end of mutual destruction and thereby satisfy our desires. They lyrics of this song in the face of change are true and time tested. As we encounter change, whether or not we embrace it, we must face the future as it unfolds before us and seek to be a part of that future in shaping it and sharing our joys and sorrows with our fellow humans. May God grant us the determination to shape change to improve the world and may that determination exceed our determination for the destruction of ourselves and others. Let us also remember that oppression and slavery have never aided mankind but, rather, have caused us to stagnate by eliminating the driving force for innovation. Those familiar with history know that oppression and slavery for the purpose of obtaining cheap labor have never been a benefit to society as a whole but have stifled innovation by skewing market forces to make innovation without profit. That is, it profit a man nothing to enslave or oppress his brothers. A thought.
