MEMO DATE: June 12, 2013 TO: All Department Heads (Employees) FROM: Darlene Steele REF: Statements to media The new employee manual states that “the Mayor and/or designee is the official spokesperson of the village” and that “no other employee is to discuss Village issues with any representative of the news media unless the Mayor and/or designee has specifically given such employee permission to do so.” Because it is not possible for me to know what goes on in all departments all of the time, I am giving permission to all village department heads and/or their designees to speak with representatives of the media when such situations arise. I am cautioning, however, that when speaking with media representatives, department heads and/or their designees”are required to answer questions in general terms and without disclosing any confidential or sensitive information. General questions regarding the Village or any of its personnel (elected and appointed officials) must be answered in a positive and supportive manner. Employees are cautioned that their use and/or access to the news media, as a private citizen, must be kept separate and distinct at all times from their employment with the Village, and than any contact with the media, as a private citizen, must be tempered by the fact that each employee’s actions in their private life may not impact negatively upon the reputation of the Village.
