Changes adopted for LPSC Garden Competition Subsequent to suggestions from the public and discussion with the Quirindi Garden Club, Liverpool Plains Shire Council (LPSC) has resolved to expand the Shire’s 2013/14 Garden Competition. “For a number of years Council has run a garden competition to acknowledge residents who take pride in the care and presentation of their gardens, to encourage other residents to do the same and to improve the aesthetics and amenity of the Shire,” said LPSC Mayor, Councillor Ian Lobsey OAM. “The competition is supported by local businesses that provide sponsorship and prizes, Council also sponsors a category and provides certificates to all category winners,” he said. Councillor Lobsey said that this year the categories of Best Garden Favourite Spot, Best Potted Garden, Best Water Feature and Best Child’s Garden will be included for the first time. He said these new categories would be added to the existing twelve. “It was put to Council that the competition had the potential to become a tourist attraction and to build on the Shire’s reputation for gardens developed through the open garden scheme including a number of substantial rural gardens. Councillors certainly saw a lot of merit in the proposal.” he continued. “Entrants to the competition will be invited to open their gardens to the public the weekend following the announcement of category winners,” he said. “Council would like to hear from any businesses that would be prepared to sponsor the new categories and be part of LPSC’s endeavours to facilitate community participation and maximise tourism and economic development potential,” Councillor Lobsey concluded
